Society has become liberal towards tattoos. Nearly 40% Americans have at least one tattoo on their bodies. But tattoos are not that accepted into corporate culture. Some industries consider them offensive as they are not decent or ideal for the formal setting. It is also believed that tattoos may be distracting and cause disruptions across the workspace.

However, some organizations have started allowing their employees to have a tattoo. Many people have a concern that they won’t get job with their tattoos.

Therefore, it can be said that every business type holds different views on tattoos.

Healthcare: In the health care professional field, most employers have policy regarding tattoos and piercings. Generally, most medical facilities have imposed minor restrictions on the excessive or offensive tattoos. They require their employees to cover the tattoos while on the job. Some people refuse to get treatment by a tattooed medical physician or a nurse.

However, it can be said that healthcare industry is lenient towards tattoos unless they are offensive or excessive.

Law Enforcement Agencies: Law enforcement agencies still view tattoos as unprofessional or something associated with outlaws or hooligans. A police officer has to document and photograph all the tattoos of prisoner while taking the latter into custody. Agencies are still not clear with tattoo policies. Police departments belonging to Denver, New Orleans and Oklahoma City have been in news regarding their tattoo policies.

Law Firms: Justice system is comprised of attorneys and their staff. They may not be allowed to show their tattoos in the court room, just like doctors and surgeons. You won’t see visible tattoos on the neck or knuckle on an attorney. Besides, their support staff like clerks and secretaries is supposed to be professional in their appearance.

In simple words, lawyers and other legal staff can get tattoos, which should be covered.

Administrative Staff and Receptionists: Many companies are not likely to give job to someone with visible tattoos due to their strict policies about makeup, body art, nail varnish and unnatural hair colors. Employees who are into public dealing are not allowed to show their tattoos. The reason is pretty simple—they believe that it may send a negative impression to the customer about the business. However, tattoos are accepted in salons, beauty parlors and retails stores.

Financial Institutions: Bankers, stock broker and finance expert are supposed to be professional and decent. Can tattoo go well with their image? Tattooing and piercing is not generally seen in the finance sector. Same rule applies here—they have to cover their tattoos while on the job.

Teaching: Public schools are likely to be more liberal towards tattoos than expensive private schools. But their “rulebook” expects teachers and other staff to cover up their tattoos while on the job. However, most parents are not cool about tattoos in teaching profession. They think that it would have a negative impression on the students. Colleges and universities are lenient towards tattooing.

Various Artistic Fields: Artistic professions like graphic designing, acting, singing, art décor and photography are open and accepting towards personal choices, including tattoos and piercing. No matter what tattoo you have and how much is it visible to others.

Hotels and Resorts: Acceptance of tattoos in hotel industry depends on the job a person have. For example, a front office employee or receptionist is required to look sophisticated and cover their tattoos. This is because this designation deals with the customer and is associated with the image of the organization. On the other hand, staff members, like chef and storekeeper, who don’t interact with the guests may be allowed to get tattoos.

Bars shouldn’t have problems with their tattooed bartenders. In fact, they are expected to work over their personal style. Therefore, they are free to choose tattoo and piercing.

Construction: Most construction companies don’t care about tattoos. However, they may instruct their employees to remove piercing or take care of the fresh tattoos for a safety reason. Construction workers can have ink anywhere on their body.

Fitness and Personal Training: Tattoos enhance the beauty of a well-toned and muscular body. This is why most personal trainers and fitness experts have inked their body.

Sales: This profession may allow visible ink. Sales agents are required to cover up their ink at the office or while meeting the clients. Some areas of retail sales also ask their employees to cover up. However, if you are not in a customer dealing, like working in a call centre, an employer may not put restrictions on your tattoos.
