How to Use Essential Oils for Sunburn?

As most of the essential oils cannot be used directly for sunburn relief, ensure you dilute them or add them to carrier oil. The best thing you can do is add a little amount of coconut oil. It is a wonderful carrier oil with numerous healing properties. Rest here is the process to use afore-stated essential oils;

  • Prepare your lotion

You can make your own lotion by adding a small number of essential oils to a carrier oil like coconut oil. For instance, add about 80 drops of your favorite relieving oil to one cup (8 ounces) of coconut oil. It will become a creamy solution and can be used as a sunburn lotion.

  • Add it to your spray bottle

The easiest thing you could do is fill up spray bottles with a diluted mixture of any of these essential oils. Simply, add 8 to 14 drops of your oil to a spray bottle and fill the rest with clean water. Water can be replaced using fractionated coconut oil or aloe vera juice. It is the best way out to reapply the healing mixture frequently.

  • Have a bath

Another way can be taking a bath with added essential oil. This will bring relief to the burnt skin and offer a soothing experience. For this, you need to add 15-20 drops of helpful essential oils to your tub full of lukewarm water. Just soak your body in the solution and say goodbye to the pain of sunburn.

Lastly, remember sunburns can be extremely itchy. If this is the case, avoid scratching the affected skin. Else it might lead to serious skin infection. To avoid itching, keep a topical anesthetic cream like Dr.Numb® handy. It is a numbing cream which helps to control the urge to scratch by blocking the itching signals at the nerve endings. Being FDA approved, it comes with 5 % lidocaine and is safe to use.

One should not avoid the symptoms of itching and hence should take appropriate action in form of Dr.Numb® as soon as possible. Delaying the procedure can worsen the condition. If the itching persists for a long time, it is advised to consult your doctor.
