6 Ear Piercing After Care Tips You Must Keep in Mind

Here are the precautions you must follow for the better healing of your ear piercing.

After getting your ear pierced, you need to follow a good aftercare regimen to keep infection and swelling away. Besides, it helps in the quick healing of your skin. So, let’s know the steps to be taken after your ear piercing.

Clean Hands Before Touching Earrings:

Touching ear jewelry or piercing with contaminated hands will definitely pass on bacteria and germs to pierced area, inviting swelling, puss and redness.

So, it makes sense to wash your hands with antibacterial soap to make your hands free from germs. After washing your hands, pat them dry with clean towel. You can also rub on hand sanitizer.

Use Alcohol or Saline Solution for Cleaning:

Dip a cotton ball into saline solution or alcohol and dab it on the pierced area and jewelry as well. Well, you can make saline solution either at home or purchase it at drug store. To make the saline solution, mix ¼ tbsp. of iodine free salt into a cup of warm water.

Make sure to change cotton ball after the cleaning of one side. Apply the solution in a way so that it enters in the piercing.

But don’t use cleaning solutions like hydrogen peroxide, alcohol or harsh soaps as they can leave your skin irritated.

Wear Your Earring For at Least 6 Weeks:

Don’t remove your earring before 6 weeks as doing this may close the hole due to the healing of the body.

Don’t Sleep on the Side of Piercing:

Avoid sleeping on the side of piercing as it may hurt and damage the skin tissue. It is better if you sleep on you back.

Keep Your Ear Jewelry Clean:

You can remove your ear jewelry once healing period is over. Clean them with a solution of alcohol for their sterilization.

Follow the Piercing Precautions:

  • Limit the use of caffeine, nicotine and alcohol till your piercing is healed
  • Avoid swimming and bathing in lakes or pools
  • Don’t use skin care products on or around the piercing

With these precautions, you keep the chances of infection and swelling at a bay. However, you must see your physician if you notice the prolong swelling, redness, pus discharging and pain/irritation in your pierced area.
